Best Budget HVAC Brands by Coverage per Dollar Tier

Which value-tier brands still publish full-length parts coverage, and what you give up at that price point.

Updated August 2026

Scope and methodology

Value and entry-tier residential split systems from Goodman, Rheem, Carrier Comfort, Trane XR, and Lennox Merit.

Value tiers were scored on published parts coverage for a registered system, whether a unit replacement term is published on any model in the tier, and how broadly parts are distributed, since parts availability drives repair downtime on budget equipment. Price positioning is described qualitatively because no manufacturer publishes installed pricing. HomeownerAnswers does not perform product testing and does not rank on reputation, review counts, or customer satisfaction. Scores reflect only what each manufacturer publishes and what independent public documentation supports.

Unit replacement provision25%

The ranking

  1. 1

    Goodman

Full published parts term at the lowest tier

    Basis
Publishes 10-year parts coverage on registered systems plus a unit replacement term on select models, with parts stocked broadly.
    Best for
Rental properties, flips, and replacements where the goal is a warrantied working system at the lowest installed cost.
    Caveat
The unit replacement term does not cover the entire lineup; verify the model number.
  2. 2

    Rheem

Mid pricing with full published parts term

    Basis
Publishes 10-year parts coverage on registered residential systems and is carried by standard supply houses.
    Best for
Owners who want a step above entry equipment without premium pricing.
    Caveat
Priced above the lowest value quotes in most markets.
  3. 3

    Trane XR series

    Premium brand entry tier

    Basis
Single-stage entry equipment from a premium brand, with shorter published terms than the XV top tier.
    Best for
Homeowners who want a premium dealer relationship at the lowest tier that brand offers.
    Caveat
Do not assume the brand's headline 12-year compressor term applies at this tier.
  4. 4

    Carrier Comfort series

    Premium brand entry tier

    Basis
Entry single-stage equipment usually quoted below the brand's Performance and Infinity lines.
    Best for
Buyers who want Carrier dealer support without inverter pricing.
    Caveat
Published efficiency at this tier is well below the Infinity ceiling.
  5. 5

    Lennox Merit series

Premium brand entry tier with shorter published terms

    Basis
Merit publishes shorter coverage than Signature and Elite on several product families.
    Best for
Homeowners already committed to a Lennox dealer.
    Caveat
Compare the Merit term directly against a value brand before paying a premium-brand price.

What this ranking does not score

  • Actual quoted price, which is contractor-set and varies by market.
  • Long-run durability at the value tier. Install quality dominates and is not brand-attributable.
